PROBLEM SPACE

The platform’s mission remains powerful, but its design no longer reflects its purpose

Global Radio Outreach, a non-profit platform dedicated to spreading the Gospel, launched a site extension called E-mission to Islam to track the global reach of the Gospel. However, internal stakeholders found the platform unintuitive due to several factors, including:

The raw data displayed does not clearly translate into digestible insights

The unclear CTA for donations hinders impact growth across countries

The static world map limits exploration and interaction

Who do we design for?

Our Partners

Need regular updates and shareable impact data to stay connected and communicate GRO’s mission to their networks

GRO's Team

Need centralized tools and data for planning, strategizing, and storytelling

Supporters & Visitors

Need a simple donation process and clear evidence of how their contributions change lives

project goals

Showcase Gospel Impact

Tracks salvations, discipleship, and outreach metrics in real time to reveal how the Gospel is spreading in unreached regions.

Inspire Donor Confidence

Helps donors see exactly how their contributions are making a difference

Support Informed Giving

Allows supporters to choose where and how to give, based on data and personal passion

SOLUTION

My goal is to transform raw data into clear, actionable insights while enabling users to explore an interactive world map and complete donations through seamless CTAs, boosting engagement, retention, and regional growth, supporting GRO’s mission to spread the Gospel.

KICK OFF

Users Want Clear, Actionable Insights and a Seamless Way to Engage

To support my hypothesis, I conducted an unmoderated interview with one of our core internal team members (the Tech Operations Lead), as I had limited access to external users due to privacy constraints. From the interview, I found that…

Limited Data Visibility

Users struggled to track impact across regions due to a static map and raw, unreadable data.

Short-Term Insights

Users could only see current metrics, limiting understanding of trends and growth over time.

Friction in Action

Donation CTAs were unclear and redirected users, making it hard to engage and take action.

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

Interactive Maps Exist, but Human Connection Is Missing

Next, I conducted a competitive analysis as part of the secondary research to understand what’s already out there. Since I had limited access to external users, this helped me gain insights into user behavior beyond the internal team (including visitors and donors) and understand their expectations while identifying gaps in existing solutions.

Key Takeaways

Most data visualization platforms show the power of interactive, real-time data maps, but most suffer from cluttered interfaces, confusing filters, and limited interactivity. They focus heavily on raw data with little storytelling or emotional connection, making it hard for users to grasp deeper meaning or act on insights.

Opportunity for GRO

From the key takeaways, I conclude that GRO can stand out with an integration of human stories and seamless in-page donation CTAs, which will turn static data into interactive, actionable impact.

This would create a clean, intuitive, and emotionally engaging map experience, highlighting trends, stories, and progress over time while keeping navigation simple.

DESIGN GOALS

To wrap up the research, I gathered all insights to define the design goals as a benchmark for the upcoming design phases, from ideation to final design, including:

Improve Data Visualization

Develop intuitive and impactful visual elements that make statistical data more engaging and easier to understand

Enhance Navigation and User Flow

Provide intuitive pathways for users to access relevant information quickly

Modernize and Simplify the Interface

Create a clean, professional, and consistent interface aligned with GRO’s missions

IDEATION

Turning Insights Into Priority Features

Next, I co-led the affinity mapping and prioritization matrix to clarify user pain points and rank feature ideas. From this, we focused on three key solutions: an insight dashboard with hover tooltips, an AI-powered summary, and a story-driven dashboard to address the core user needs; delivering both short-term and long-term data clarity while restoring the human connection behind GRO’s impact.

SOLUTION

01. Impact Tracking Dashboard: Simplifying Real-Time Data

"How can partners and supporters visually see real-time impact and reach, without a complicated process, to understand how the Gospel is spreading across regions?"

Solution: I proposed a dashboard with interactive, color-coded hotspots that display real-time regional data. Added AI-powered summaries and data progress highlights for quick skimming and deeper insight tracking.

Impact: Allows users track real-time gospel impact across regions with ease, improving data comprehension, engagement, and decision-making for both internal teams and external supporters.

02. Trend Analysis: Visualizing Impact Over Time

"How can users analyze the impact beyond the current data and analyze the pattern throughout the year?"

Solution: A statistics dashboard that allows users to explore deeper insights across regions and time, which includes yearly highlight summaries for quick screening, a line graph to visualize global impact over time, and a double-stacked graph to help users clearly interpret trends and long-term performance.

Impact: Enables users to track progress more holistically, improving understanding of both short-term results and long-term gospel impact.

03. Personalized Giving: Seamless & Targeted Donations

"How can users seamlessly donate while choosing a specific region they want their impact to reach?"

Solution: Streamlined donation flow that allows users to personalize their contributions by selecting specific regions they care about, which simplifies the payment process and incorporates post-donation feedback, reinforcing the purpose and projected impact of each gift.

Impact: Improving conversion rates and deepening emotional engagement by connecting donors directly with the impact of their contributions.

04. Human Connection: Stories Behind the Data

"How can we build trust and credibility through human connection to show the Gospel’s real impact?"

Solution: Introduced featured testimonial stories, showcasing how Global Radio Outreach (GRO) has transformed lives through the Gospel. Using modular testimony cards, the platform now highlights stories by region or theme, with rotating highlights on the homepage for passive discovery.

Impact: Bridges the gap between data and emotion, helping users see the human impact behind the metrics, which strengthens trust, deepens emotional engagement, and motivates visitors to support and share the mission further.

USER TESTING & STAKEHOLDER FEEDBACK

01. Making Highlight Summaries More Skimmable

Original Issue:

Users struggled to understand the highlight summaries because the sentences were too long and difficult to skim quickly. The dense text made it hard to grasp key insights at a glance.

Changes:

I restructured the wording to emphasize impact and redesigned the layout to make numbers and data points more visible. This made the summary more digestible, scannable, and insight-driven for users.

After

02. Creating a Meaningful Post-Donation Experience

Original Issue:

After completing a donation, users didn’t feel emotionally connected to the country they supported. The process ended abruptly, without any visual or emotional feedback to reinforce their contribution’s impact.

Changes:

I introduced an animation that highlights the donor’s chosen country once the payment is complete, symbolizing progress made possible through their contribution. This visual feedback celebrates the donor’s impact and fosters a stronger emotional connection to the mission.

After

03. Guiding Users to Engaging Stories Instantly

Original Issue:

Users didn’t know where to start. They wanted to discover interesting stories quickly, without having to conduct a deep search within the first minute of browsing.

Changes:

I reorganized the story layout to create an immediate “vibe check” through curated sections such as August Highlights and Recently Added. I also introduced featured stories and an extended page for deeper exploration, allowing users to both enjoy quick discovery and browse more intentionally when they wish to explore further.

Hero section

REFLECTIONS

Things I've learned:

Exploring beyond my limit

As this was my first internship experience, it was an amazing journey where I learned a lot through this project. I kept exploring beyond my limits by trying various unfamiliar prototyping techniques combined with numerous design iterations, which enhanced my perseverance and made me enjoy the design process until I reached the final design

Sharpens my creativity

During research, I faced limitations engaging with external users, so I relied heavily on internal insights. This pushed me to think creatively and use multiple methods, including internal interviews and secondary research to understand user needs and identify solutions despite limited data.
